Carbide grinding sludge is generated by any operation that grinds tungsten carbide tools or parts. Common sources include CNC tool grinding shops, carbide insert manufacturers, solid carbide endmill and drill manufacturers, carbide rod and blank producers, and any facility that uses surface or cylindrical grinders on carbide workpieces.
Why Carbide Sludge Has Real Value
Tungsten carbide grinding sludge contains the same tungsten as the solid carbide it came from — the grinding process doesn't destroy the tungsten content, it just reduces the particle size. Depending on the grade of carbide being ground, sludge can contain 70–90% tungsten carbide by dry weight.
The challenge with sludge is that it's mixed with coolant, water, and grinding wheel particles, which reduces the effective tungsten content per pound of wet sludge. We account for moisture content and contamination when pricing sludge — but even wet sludge from high-volume grinding operations can represent significant value that most shops are literally pouring down the drain.

Allow wet sludge to settle and drain as much coolant as possible before packaging.
Place sludge in heavy-duty sealed plastic bags (double-bag for wet material).
Place sealed bags inside a rigid container — a 5-gallon bucket with a lid works well for smaller quantities.
Label the container with your name and contact information.
